Gentle stabilisation and support
for your joints and muscles
At Dr Beate Helgers’ private orthopaedic practice, we use tried-and-tested yet innovative treatment methods to provide targeted relief from your symptoms and support your recovery. Kinesio taping offers a gentle way to stabilise joints, muscles and tendons without restricting mobility – ideal for orthopaedic conditions, injuries and also for preventative purposes.
What is Kinesio taping?
Kinesio tapes are elastic strips that are
applied to the skin and work without the use of medication.
The tapes are supplied on rolls and can be cut to size, length and shape to suit individual treatment needs. They are available in various colours and designs, although the choice of colour has no effect on the therapeutic benefit.
The tapes act on the skin’s receptors and have a positive effect on the underlying structures, such as tendons, ligaments and muscles. They can promote blood circulation, regulate muscle activity and stabilise the affected joint or muscle group without restricting freedom of movement.
How does kinesiotaping work?
Kinesio tape works via the receptors in the skin, which transmit information to the nervous system. These stimuli have a positive effect on:
- Muscles: relaxation or activation, depending on how the tape is applied.
- Tendons and ligaments: A supportive effect in cases of strain or injury.
- Joints: Stabilisation and improved mobility through the targeted application of the tape.
Unlike rigid bandages, kinesiotaping does not restrict freedom of movement; instead, it supports the natural range of motion whilst improving the stability of the affected area of the body. The elastic strips mould to your skin, providing gentle yet effective support in everyday life or during sporting activities.
Where do we use Kinesio taping?
Kinesio taping can be used in many areas and is particularly effective for:
- Joint problems: to provide support and stabilisation for pain in the knee, shoulder or ankle
- Spinal problems: to relieve tension or pain in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine
- Muscle injuries: for strains, overuse or muscle tension
- Tendon and ligament problems: to provide support for tendon irritation or ligament strains
- Preventative care: to protect against overuse during sport or in everyday life.
Our practice uses kinesiotaping both to treat acute injuries and as a preventative measure to reduce the risk of overuse. We frequently use the tape, particularly around the joints and spine, to effectively relieve symptoms whilst promoting mobility.

How is Kinesio taping applied?
At our practice, the tape is customised to each individual. Depending on the area of application and the symptoms, the Kinesio tape is cut to the appropriate size and shape and applied precisely to the affected area of the body. The application technique plays a crucial role in achieving the desired effect – whether that be pain relief, stabilisation or the relief of strain on muscles, tendons or joints.
Important:
The tapes do not contain any medicines or active ingredients; instead, they work solely through their mechanical and sensory effects on the skin and the underlying structures.
The benefits of Kinesio taping:
- Customised fit: The tape is cut to fit your exact needs and the area of the body being treated.
- No restriction of movement: Kinesio taping supports movement whilst protecting the joint or muscle.
- Versatile application: Whether you’re dealing with joint problems, spinal issues or muscle injuries – the tape offers an effective solution.
- Pain-free and gentle: The application is pain-free; the tape does not interfere with everyday life and remains on the skin for several days.
- Support for everyday life and sport: Ideal for providing support during sporting activities or during periods of intense physical exertion.
Kinesio taping is an effective and gentle method of stabilising and supporting joints, muscles and tendons without restricting your range of motion. Whether for the treatment of acute symptoms or for prevention, we tailor the tape to your individual needs, ensuring optimal support for your health.

Questions and Answers on Kinesio Taping
FAQs
Are there any risks or side effects?
Kinesio taping is a very safe treatment method with few side effects. As the tapes do not contain any active ingredients, they are generally well tolerated even by people with sensitive skin. In rare cases, skin irritation may occur, particularly in people with very sensitive skin or allergies to the tape’s adhesive. In such cases, the tape can be easily removed and an alternative treatment method chosen.
How long does the tape last?
Kinesio tape can usually be worn for several days. It is waterproof, so you can shower or take part in sporting activities whilst wearing it. Depending on the level of use and your skin type, the tape can remain on the skin for up to a week before it loses its effectiveness and needs to be replaced.
Our tip: The tape can get wet in the shower, but should be gently patted dry afterwards. It can also be blow-dried to help it stick better again.
