Denervation (also known as denervation) is a tried-and-tested method for long-term pain relief in cases of chronic lower back pain, facet joint osteoarthritis and knee osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis). It is particularly recommended when injections near the spine have repeatedly proved successful. The procedure involves selectively severing pain fibres, thereby blocking the transmission of pain signals.

What methods are available?
This technique can be carried out in two ways:
- Radiofrequency thermodenervation (denervation using heat)
High-frequency current is used to apply targeted heat in order to sever pain-conducting nerve fibres. - Cryodenervation (denervation by freezing)
As an alternative, the nerve is frozen using cold and its function is disrupted.
Radiofrequency thermodenervation is a useful and superior advancement on traditional thermodenervation, as it allows for more precise temperature control and thus ensures an even more targeted treatment.
How does the treatment work?
- Precise planning
: Before treatment, the joints to be treated (facet joints or knee joints) are precisely identified. - Ultrasound guidance to reduce
radiation exposure In our practice, we carry out the treatment under ultrasound guidance. This significantly reduces radiation exposure compared with X-ray-guided procedures. - Local anaesthesia
The exact positions of the individual probes are first determined, followed by targeted anaesthesia before the actual treatment begins. - Preliminary
stimulation Before the actual radiofrequency therapy, a test stimulation (sensory and motor stimulation) is carried out to ensure that no major nerves can be damaged. - Targeted energy delivery
Each individual probe position is treated for approximately two minutes. - Wound care
A small wound dressing is sufficient after the treatment.
When is thermodenervation advisable?
The treatment is particularly suitable for:
- Chronic back pain caused by wear and tear or osteoarthritis of the small vertebral joints (facet joint osteoarthritis).
- Sacroiliac joint (SIJ)
pain; discomfort in the area of the sacroiliac joints - Osteoarthritis-related knee pain (gonarthrosis)

How long do the effects of thermodenervation last?
In many cases, the reduction in pain lasts for between 6 months and several years. If the nerves regrow, the treatment can be repeated.
Is the treatment painful?
Thermodenervation is carried out under local anaesthetic. During the procedure, you may feel a sensation of warmth or cold.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Side effects are very rare. Immediately after treatment, you may experience brief localised discomfort at the wound site or a slight numbness around the scar.
