How does laser therapy work?

Unlike superficial heat or cold treatments, the laser acts at a cellular level, thereby promoting blood circulation, metabolism and tissue regeneration. The treatment is painless, non-invasive and is particularly effective for joint conditions such as osteoarthritis, as well as for soft tissue problems such as tendonitis, bruises, sprains or muscle tension.

These laser devices offer targeted and deep-acting treatment and differ significantly from simple laser pointers and dermatological or surgical lasers. Thanks to the adjusted pulse rate and energy distribution, we can ensure that you do not experience any heat or pain during the treatment, but only feel a pleasant warmth.

is laser therapy suitable?
Laser therapy is an extremely versatile method that can be used to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. For example, it can be used to relieve pain and promote muscle recovery in cases of osteoarthritis, inflammation or muscle injuries.

How does laser treatment work?
Laser treatment at our practice is straightforward and very comfortable for most patients. A session usually lasts just a few minutes, depending on the size or depth of the affected area.
During the treatment, you will usually feel only a slight, pleasant warmth on your skin – pain is generally not an issue. The laser penetrates deep into the tissue without damaging it, where it exerts its healing effect. After just a few sessions, many patients report a noticeable relief from their symptoms.
Another advantage is that you can resume your normal activities straight away. The treatment can be easily integrated into your daily routine – with no downtime or restrictions whatsoever.
How often should laser therapy be carried out?
The optimal number of sessions depends on the nature, duration and severity of your symptoms, as well as your individual response to the treatment. In most cases, we recommend several sessions per week – usually one to three – to allow the therapy to take full effect.
As laser therapy can be integrated particularly well into a holistic treatment plan, we often combine it with other tried-and-tested methods – such as physiotherapy, targeted injections or manual treatment of muscles and connective tissue. This not only alleviates pain but also addresses the underlying cause in the long term.

Modern high-energy laser therapy is an important component of pain management, particularly in orthopaedics and sports medicine. It uses laser light at two wavelengths (810 nm and 980 nm) and enables targeted treatment of both superficial and deep tissue layers. The therapy has an anti-inflammatory effect, promotes blood circulation, improves the breakdown of metabolic waste products and reduces sensitivity to pain.

Is laser therapy worth it?
Modern laser therapy is not only effective, but also pain-free, well tolerated and free from any known side effects. It is therefore also suitable for sensitive patients or those with pre-existing conditions. The therapy is also cost-effective, as the treatment costs are often offset by significant savings, such as reduced use of painkillers, less time off work and fewer operations.
Can laser therapy help with my sports injuries or muscle tension?
The laser’s targeted deep-tissue action helps to reduce inflammation, minimise swelling and speed up healing. The muscles relax more quickly, pain subsides – and many athletes are able to return to training sooner.
Are there any disadvantages to laser therapy?
Laser therapy is considered to be very well tolerated and low-risk. Nevertheless, there are a few points you should be aware of:
- Several sessions may be necessary: lasting therapeutic success is not usually achieved after the first treatment. The body needs a little time to respond to the stimuli – but the effects are longer-lasting as a result.
- Patience is required: The therapy works biologically – not overnight, but through the body’s natural healing process. Those who stick with the treatment consistently usually benefit from significant relief from symptoms without any side effects.
Limited effectiveness in cases of severe damage: In cases of advanced joint disease or very severe structural damage, laser therapy may only provide relief rather than a cure. In such cases, surgery may be necessary.
Are there any cases in which laser therapy cannot be used?
Patients with photosensitivity, severe skin conditions, cancer or acute infections should not undergo laser therapy. We carry out an individual risk assessment before every treatment. If laser therapy is not suitable, we will discuss appropriate alternatives from our comprehensive range of treatments with you. The treatment must also be carefully considered in the event of pregnancy or if you are taking certain medicines.
