Differential diagnosis
Differential diagnosis at Dr Beate Helgers’ private practice:
Understanding complex causes
Every person is unique – and medical complaints and their causes can be just as individual.
In our private orthopaedic practice, we adopt a systematic and patient-centred approach to differential diagnosis. Particularly in the case of complex or unclear symptoms, it is crucial not only to treat the symptoms, but also to identify their causes thoroughly. To this end, we combine state-of-the-art diagnostic technology with clinical experience and an interdisciplinary approach.
What is meant by differential diagnosis?
Differential diagnosis is the structured process of ruling out possible conditions with similar symptoms. The focus is not on the quickest diagnosis, but on the most accurate one.
In our practice, we combine various diagnostic methods: from detailed consultations and physical examinations through to laboratory tests and complex movement and posture analyses. The aim is to pinpoint the cause of your symptoms individually and precisely in order to draw up an effective treatment plan.
Our diagnostic approach
in detail
Detailed medical history
At your first appointment, we will discuss your symptoms, lifestyle and medical history in detail. This information forms the basis for further diagnostic tests.
Clinical whole-body examination
We do not just examine the affected joint, but analyse your entire musculoskeletal system from head to toe. This gives us a complete picture of your posture, body mechanics and movement patterns.
Ultrasound
examinations Using state-of-the-art ultrasound technology, we can examine your muscles, tendons, joints and soft tissues to identify any inflammatory or degenerative changes.
X-ray or MRI
: Where necessary, we will arrange for an X-ray examination or an MRI scan to identify the extent of the damage to specific structures. We are happy to provide organisational support to ensure that appointments can be arranged quickly and at short notice.
Targeted injections
A key component of our diagnostic process is the administration of precise injections, which we carry out with a steady hand at precisely localised pain points. By administering medication directly to deep-seated structures, we are not only able to better identify the causes of your pain, but also to initiate an effective initial course of treatment at the same time.
- Diagnosis and treatment in one step: the injections help to identify and treat the root causes of the pain.
- Rapid relief: Even the first treatment can bring noticeable relief.
- Long-lasting effect: For a more sustained effect, we generally recommend repeated injections, combined with other effective treatment approaches that address additional structures.
Orthopaedic Laboratory
We carry out specific blood tests to identify inflammatory processes, autoimmune disorders, nutritional deficiencies or hormonal factors.
Movement and Posture
Analysis Using precise static and dynamic methods, we assess your range of motion and load distribution. This helps us to identify incorrect loading patterns or muscular imbalances.
VNS Analysis
: To assess your stress levels and ability to recover, we measure your autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems).
Nutritional advice
: We analyse your eating habits and lifestyle to identify any factors that may be contributing to your symptoms and to optimise your nutrient intake.
Relaxation and stress management
: Stress and tension can also be causes of physical discomfort. We take these factors into account in our assessment and provide you with advice on relaxation techniques and physical activity.
Interdisciplinary collaboration
: Our team works closely with sports scientists to provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan for your symptoms.

Why go to all this trouble?
Orthopaedic problems are often not one-dimensional. A painful knee may be caused by poor posture, inflammation, hormonal factors or even stress. A thorough differential diagnosis prevents misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment.
With our multidimensional approach, we can identify the root cause of your symptoms and develop a long-term solution.
